Iran turns Cameron’s criticisms back on Britain

Iran has slammed the British Prime Minister for accusing Iran of supporting terrorists in the Middle East region, saying it is Britain that “has afflicted the world with the evil of ISIS.”

Mehr News reports that Marzieh Afkham, a spokeswoman for Iran’s foreign ministry, said: “Britain has a history of creating discord in the region, and many of the problems in the region are a result of wrong British policies.”

“It is shameful that the country that has afflicted our region and the world with the evil of ISIS, with its actions and support for terrorists, is now making inappropriate judgements about Iran, which has always been on the frontline of the fight against terrorism.”

In his UN speech, British Prime Minister David Cameron, who met with President Hassan Rohani yesterday, told the Assembly: “We have severe disagreements: Iran's support for terrorist organizations, its nuclear program, its treatment of its people."

Britain, which has been cautiously supportive of cooperating with Iran in the international efforts against ISIS, said that Iran “should also be given the chance to show it can be part of the solution, not part of the problem.”

Iran and Britain recently resumed diplomatic relations, which were severed back in 2011 after the British embassy in Iran was attacked, in response to Britain’s support for international sanctions on Iran. Both countries closed their respective embassies.
