Miners in Semnan Province stage sit-in to protest privatization

Miners at the Eastern Alborz Mine began a strike today, Sunday July 6, to protest the privatization of the mine.

OLNA reports that according to the workers' representative, about 1,400 coal miners from the Eastern Alborz Mine in the Province of Semnan have stopped working and gathered on the mine premises for a sit-in.

Rahman Ajam, the workers’ rep, says the government transferred all shares in the mine to the private company Isfahan Steel Factory, and the workers are now worried about their job security.

He added that 200 of the workers are contract workers and the rest are permanent employees.

The director of the company, Hossein Rabizadeh, denied any interruption in the work of the mine and said the move to privatize is in the interests of the workers.

The Eastern Alborz Mine Company is one of the largest producers of coal used in the production of concentrated coal in Isfahan steel furnaces.
