Now that the “Burnt City” has been registered as Iran’s 17th cultural site on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the Sistan-Baluchistan Prosecutor’s Office is planning security measures to prevent any form of drilling or digging in the area.
The provincial officials report that security personnel have already been assigned to the Burn City area and illegal digging and drilling in the area will have serious consequences for offenders.
The head of the Sistan-Baluchistan court says the registration of the city by UNESCO may have created the mistaken belief that hidden treasures are buried at the historic site He said that any form of illegal digging or exploitation of site will be met with a serious response, which is why security measures have been intensified.
The Burnt City in southeastern Iran is estimated to have been built more than 5,200 years ago. It was added to the UNESCO list in June.
