A number activists were arrested in Tabriz and Oroumiyeh by morality police, according to various local media reports.
Photographs have been posted on social media showing protesters denouncing “negligent officials” for failing to save the lake, which is rapidly drying out. Protesters called for “the breaking of dams to fill up Lake Oroumiyeh.”
In recent days, a number of calls have gone out to rally the public to demonstrate in support of environmental action to save the dying lake. The local website Oyan reported on Wednesday morning that some of the activists detained in Tabriz had been released.
The activists protest that the Rohani administration has not honoured its promise to find a way to save Lake Oroumiyeh.
The administration has established a working group to save Lake Oroumiyeh, and it has met several times, but no concrete resolution has yet been announced.
