Women’s rights activist, filmmaker summoned to Evin

Evin Prison has summoned Mahnaz Mohammadi, the Iranian filmmaker and women’s rights activist, to serve out her five-year prison sentence.

Mohammadi was sentenced in September of 2012 for “assembly and collusion against national security and propaganda against the regime.”

Mohammadi has denied the charges in an interview with the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, saying her other charges were for collaborating with Rakhshan Bani-Etemad in the production of the film “We are half of the Iranian Population” and for participating in the 2009 protests. She also referred to her attendance at the funerals of Sohrab Aarabi and other people killed in the 2009 election protests, where she filmed and took photographs.

Mohammadi also referred to what she described as “a contrived scenario” in which she received money from Persian BBC for production of a film.

Mahnaz Mohammadi was first arrested along with Jafar Panahi and several other filmmakers at the memorial service of Neda Agha Soltan, who was killed in the street demonstrations of 2009.
