Head of Iran’s Judiciary announced that Ali Asghar Jahangir will relplace Gholamhossein Esmaili as head of Prison Organizations.
Ayatollah Larijani stressed that Esmaili will now lead the Directorate General of Tehran Province Court and the Tehran Appeals Court .
The change comes after the controversial attack reported by opposition website Kaleme in the Ward 350 of Evin Prison during which over 30 political prisoners were severely beaten.
Esmaili as chief of prisons has denied the attack and yesterday head of judiciary Ayatollah Larijani backed Esmaili’s statements saying nothing out of the ordinary has occurred.
A number of prisoners have gone on strike in protest to the violent treatment and families of the prisoners have been calling for a probe into the matter by staging protests in front of parliament and the president’s office.
The authorities insist that the shuffle has nothing to do with the Evin Prison incident and had been in the works since months ago.
