Thousands of travellers caught in snowstorms

A new wave of cold and snow in various regions of Iran has stranded thousands of Norooz travellers on the road, and in one instance two people were killed due to landslides.

ISNA reported on Monday March 31 that snow and blizzards in the northernmost part of the country have caused landslides in the Karaj-Chaloos region, leaving two people dead and another two travelers missing.

Nine provinces in the north and northeast of the country have seen a sudden drop in temperature along with heavy snowfalls.

ISNA reports that the head of the Red Crescent rescue unit reports that it has assisted 14,000 travelers caught in the snow and blizzard conditions, which have caused 32 injuries.

Meanwhile, 1,600 travelers have reportedly been given shelter in mosques and rescue bases in the area.

Weather reports indicate that another cold wave bringing snow and other precipitation is on its way. Chahar Mahal Bakhtiyari, Kohgiloyeh & Boyerahmad, Lorestan and Isfahan mountain regions will see more snowfall, while Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Hamedan, Markazi, Ilam, Yazd, Kerman, Bushehr, Tehran, Alborz and Qom will have heavy rainfall.
