Lakhdar Brahim UN envoy for Syrian affairs arrived in Tehran on Sunday March 16 to discuss possible solutions to the Syrian conflict with Iranian officials.
Three years into the violent conflicts in Syria, the international community has not been successful in negotiating a peace deal.
Iranian media report that Brahimi met with Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani on Sunday and is set to meet with Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif on Monday.
Brahimi visits Iran a month after the Geneva 2 talks aimed at resolving the conflict in Syria. An earlier invitation to Iran to join the talks in February was later withdrawn following opposition from the US.
Meanwhile latest reports from Syria indicate that following heavy fighting on Saturday, the Syrian army is on the verge of taking control of Yabrud the last stronghold of rebels near the Lebanese border.
