Rising gasoline imports let Iran stop production of dirty fuel

The National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company reports that Iran has tripled its gasoline imports.

The Mehr News Agency reports that Mostafa Kashkooli, the director of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company, announced that Iran’s petrochemical industry will stop producing gasoline starting in the Iranian New Year, and imported gasoline will meet the country’s needs.

The Minister of Oil said last week that officials were looking at halting gasoline production at petrochemical plants. The plan came after the head of the Department of the Environment called for an end to the production of substandard gasoline, which according to the department is causing severe air pollution.

In the past three years, eight to 10 million litres of gasoline have been produced on a daily basis by petrochemical complexes in Iran, and according to experts, that has been extremely detrimental to air quality.
