Iranian MP Hassan Tala told Parliament that 1,796 workers died in workplace accidents last year as well as another 1,507 in the year before that.
Tala told Fars that the Ministry of Labour must make greater efforts in inspecting workshops, factories and other industrial units for compliance with safety regulations.
He said that in recent months, the fire at the Jomhouri Street clothing workshop and the Kerman mine incident have brought greater attention to the issue of workplace safety, and he highlighted the fact that inspectors are accomplishing their duties.
Last month, two workers jumped to their death after fire engulfed a clothing factory on Jomhouri Street. Three miners died after an explosion in Kerman’s Kuhbanan coal mine caught miners under debris.
