Students demand return of expelled professors

Students of Social Sciences at Allameh Tabatabai University have staged protests calling for the return of professors who were forced out of their jobs.

The Fararo Website reports that the students called for the return of Parviz Piran, Shirin Ahmadnia, Ebrahim Tofigh, Shahla Ezazi, Nematollah Fazeli and Hassan Namakdoost.

In recent years, especially after the 2009 election protests, many progressive professors were dismissed from universities or forced into early retirement.

Hassan Rohani’s more moderate administration, which took power last August, has facilitated the return of some expelled students and faculty members in recent months.

The protesting students at Allameh Tabatabi University have the support of the Sociology, Social Programming, Social Work, Journalism, Public Relations, Cooperation and Welfare Associations as well as the Workers Guild of the University.

Allameh Tabtabai University is Iran’s largest humanities university.
