Rights group calls on Iran to spare condemned Arab activists

Amnesty International is urging Iran to end human rights violations against Arab minorities in Iran.

In a statement issued on Thursday January 16, Amnesty International welcomed the Iranian president’s latest statement that “The government will not tolerate any form of discrimination against ethnic minorities.”

Amnesty International is calling for a number of condemned Arab activists to be spared from their death sentences.

Amnesty International is referring to Hadi Rashedi, Mohammad Ali Amourinejad, Jaber Alboshokeh and Mokhtar Alboshokeh, who have been sentenced to death for “enmity against God and acting against national security.”

The report indicates that Rashedi and Hashem Shaabaninejad were transferred to an unknown location last month and their families have been kept in the dark regarding their situation.

The Iranian president has been vocal in his support for ethnic minorities, but experts maintain that so far the new government has not been able to make any palpable difference in the conditions faced by minorities or the widespread discrimination they encounter in the justice system and other social institutions.
