Iranian MPs vote to move capital despite reservations

Iranian Parliament has approved the plan to move the political capital out of Tehran.

Khaneh Mellat reports that the despite the speaker’s recognition that the project comes with “a heavy financial burden”, the bill was passed with 110 in favour and 67 opposed with 10 abstaining.

The bill authorizes the establishment of an “Organizing Council of the Capital” by the executive branch of the government.

The council is charged with figuring out all the necessary details of moving the political capital out of Tehran within the two-year deadline.

There was serious opposition to the plan, with MPs maintaining that the administration does not have the necessary financial plan and budget to back such a move. However, others have held that the transfer is vital because the problems of population density and pollution in the capital have reached alarming levels.
