Reuters reports that big U.S. oil companies are refraining from lobbying for expanding relations with Iran.
According to Reuters, oil companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. stand to gain huge profits from gaining access to Iranian oil through the easing of U.S. sanctions, as Iran has some of the world’s largest and most cost-effective oil resources.
However, U.S. energy companies have kept silent, even when Congress considered further limitations on Iran’s oil exports.
The report indicates that the issue of Iranian sanctions appears to be too hot to tackle in U.S. Congress. Reuters quoted one lobbyist saying his company had received no client requests to lobby on Iranian sanctions this year.
While the U.S. Congress remains highly suspicious of the talks with Iran, European countries have looked at the opening in relations with Iran as a welcome opportunity.
