U.S. President Barack Obama has extended the 33-year-old national emergency against Iran for another year.
Obama stated that relations between Tehran and Washington have not yet normalized, even though both governments are working toward better relations.
The state of emergency with Iran was declared in 1979 and has been renewed periodically since then.
An Obama administration official said: "This is a routine renewal of policy and is not new or connected in any way to the Geneva discussion."
Iran and the 5+1 have been negotiating in Geneva for a deal on Iran's nuclear activities, and both sides have announced that an agreement could be reached in the near future.
