Human rights groups have expressed grave concern regarding the health of jailed labour activist Reza Shahabi in Tehran’s Evin Prison.
The Reza Shahabi Defence Committee announced that there is grave concern regarding the failure of the authorities to provide Shahabi with necessary medical treatment.
Amnesty International also issued a statement on November 6 calling for immediate medical treatment for Shahabi.
The rights groups stressed that Shahabi is being persecuted for peaceful labour activities and it urged the public to contact the authorities to call for the unconditional release of Shahabi.
An executive member of the Sherkat-e Vahed Tehran bus drivers’ Union, Shahabi was arrested in 2010 and sentenced to six years in prison.
Shahabi is suffering from severe neck complications and has gone on several hunger strikes in order to receive medical attention in jail.
