Prosecutor assassinated amid rising tensions

The prosecutor general of Zabol, in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, has been assassinated.

The Sistan-Baluchistan justice department announced on November 6 that Mousa Nouri Ghalehno was assassinated by unknown assailants.

The head of the provincial justice department, Ebrahim Hamidi, said the attack occurred when the prosecutor was being driven to his place of work, adding that the prosecutor's driver was also killed in the incident.

Hamidi has been quoted as saying that the assassination of the Zabol prosecutor is not linked to the past week's attacks on Saravan border officers, adding: "The terrorist elements in the north and south of the province are completely separate."

Last week, the militant group Jeysh-ol-Adl attacked Iranian border officers in Saravan in Sistan-Baluchistan and killed at least 14 officers.

In response, Iranian authorities executed 16 political prisoners who were on death row in the province.

The mass execution of prisoners by the province's justice department has been condemned by human rights groups and raised fears that it will trigger more violence in the region.
