Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami has expressed serious concern regarding the attack on the daughters of MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, the opposition leaders under house arrest.
Reports from Iran indicate that on their last visit to their detained parents, Zahra and Nargess Mousavi were assaulted and harassed by security forces.
Mousavi and Rahnavard have been under house arrest since 2011 for refusing to accept the legitimacy of the 2009 election.
The Kaleme website reports that Khatami has said: “We have every hope that by putting an end to the house arrest of MirHosein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Zahra Rahnavard and releasing all political prisoners, all the energy of the country can be concentrated on providing more progress, welfare and peace for our people.”
Despite the new administration’s promises to seek the release of all political prisoners, Islamic Republic hardliners have shown serious resistance to the release of the opposition leaders.
