The head of Iranian Parliament’s urban development commission has announced that the political capital is to be transferred to the suburbs of the city of Saveh.
The commission has determined that the transfer of the political capital outside of Tehran will be a significant step in reducing pollution in that city.
Air pollution has been a serious concern in the Iranian capital in recent years. Heavy auto traffic as well as dust storms have been identified as the major source of this pollution.
The commission announced that the re-location of the political capital has now been fully approved by the commission and will soon be put to a vote in Parliament.
Saveh is located about 100 km southwest of Tehran and has a population of just over 179,000.
