Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has invited the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit Iran.
ISNA reports that Zarif met with Navi Pillay on the sidelines of the 68th UN General Assembly and spoke of the “progress of democracy in Iran” and “the participation of the people in determining their political future” in Iran.
ISNA reports that Navi Pillay has welcomed the new atmosphere in Iran and expressed his wish for more cooperation and interaction between the UN rights commission and Iran.
In recent years, the Iranian government has barred Ahmad Shaheed, the UN rapporteur on human rights in Iran, from entering the country, saying his appointment was politically motivated.
