Iranians take gold at World Wrestling Championships
Reza Yazdani

Iranian wrestlers captured two gold medals on the first day of competition at the FILA World Wrestling Championships in Budapest.

Hassan Rahimi beat Amit Kumar in the finals in the 55 kg category. Kumar holds two Asian gold medals and has previously defeated Rahimi, but on Monday September 16, Rahimi managed to surpass his 2011 bronze medal and win gold.

Reza Yazdani got the world champion title for the second time, beating Khatag Gazymov from the Republic of Azerbaijan. Gazymov was world champion in 2011, and this was the fourth time the two wrestlers have met on the mat. While Gazymov defeated Yazdani on the first two occasions, Yazdani gained the upper hand the last two times.

In the 66 kg category, the Armenian wrestler David Safarian nabbed the gold medal, beating his Cuban adversary.
On the first day of the championships, freestyle wrestling competitions were held in the 55, 66 and 96 kg categories.
