Valerie Amos, the UN’s humanitarian chief, met with Iranian officials on Sunday September 15 to secure more humanitarian assistance for Syrian civilians caught in their country’s ongoing conflict.
During a visit to Tehran, Amos also told journalists that she has called on the Iranian government to assist in providing aid agencies with greater access to Syrian locations.
Amos told reporters: “The humanitarian situation in Syria currently is dire. We now have a situation where 6.8 million people in the country are in urgent need of help. That's nearly a third of the population."
Iran has endorsed the Syrian government throughout the many months of that country’s conflict and also contributes to humanitarian aid in Syria.
