Over the past two days, hundreds of mountain climbers and environmental activists from across Iran have gathered in Kerman to create a human chain around Kouhshah (Mount King) in an effort to halt mining activities in the mountainous region.
The Mehr News Agency reports that the construction activities have destroyed parts of the mountain and been detrimental to the walnut forests in the region.
Local residents and environmental activists were reportedly alarmed by continued explosions that have already demolished large parts of Kouhshah.
Mehr reports that after two days of resistance by the activists and residents, the governor of Kerman finally announced today, Sunday September 15, that all mining activities in Kouhshah will be suspended to allow for a review of the planned activities by a special delegation.
