Ahmad Masjed Jamei

Prominent reformist figure Ahmad Masjed Jamei has won the leadership of Tehran City Council with a vote of 31 to 16.
Iranian media report that the election of the presiding board took place on September 3 at the council’s first meeting.
Mehdi Chamran, the member supported by the conservatives, received only 15 votes and was defeated.
Masjed Jamei announced that the election of the new mayor is the first item on council’s agenda, and the current president can no longer sign any projects or documents until that election.
Mohammadbagher Ghalibof, the current Tehran mayor, and Mohsen Hashemi Rafsanjani, the former head of the Tehran subway system, are the two candidates for Tehran mayor.
