Iran has announced a delay in the launch of the 40-megawatt heavy water research reactor (IR-40) in Arak.
ISNA reports that Iran previously had informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that the 40-megawatt reactor was scheduled to launch in the first three months of 2014 and it has now told the UN nuclear watchdog that the launch has been postponed to the last three months of that year.
Iran’s nuclear agency has announced that the Arak reactor has a non-nuclear fuel production line and will be used for the production of medical isotopes.
According to Iranian officials, the Arak reactor will be the country’s first domestically built research reactor.
