A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry says Syrian opposition forces are responsible for the use of chemical weapons, asserting that “there is a plot to accuse the Syrian government of using these weapons.”
ISNA reports that Abbas Araghchi condemned the use of chemical weapons and said: “The coincidence that the weapons were used while UN inspectors were present in Syria is a strong indication that there is a plot to accuse the Syrian government of using these weapons and further deepen the spread of conflict and crisis.”
The foreign ministry spokesman warned against “any moves or declarations that would lead to further tension in the region” and added: “There is no justification for military intervention in Syria.”
Syrian opposition forces claim government forces used nerve gass that killed 1,300 people on the outskirts of Damascus. The Syrian government has categorically denied the charges.
