Three of Hassan Rohani’s proposed cabinet members have been rejected by the Iranian Parliament.
Mohammadali Najafi, Jafar Mili Monfared and Masoud Soltanifar, who were respectively proposed for the ministries of education, science and sports, failed to receive majority votes in Parliament and will not join Rohani’s cabinet.
At a parliamentary session that stretched into the late hours of August 15, the other 15 proposed members were approved by majority votes.
The new Minister of the Economy and Treasury enjoyed the highest level of approval with 274 votes, followed by Minister of Energy Hamid Chitchian with 272 votes.
The proposed minister for the Ministry of Science and Research, Jafar Mili Monfared, received the most nay votes, with 162 voting against him. He was especially criticized for not taking a hard line against student groups.
