Lake Oroumiyeh
The Iranian Power Ministry has announced that water levels in Lake Oroumiyeh have risen since last September.
The drying out of Lake Oroumiyeh, Iran’s largest inland lake, has caused great concern in recent years.
ILNA reports that the water levels have increased by 24 centimetres since last September.
The ministry has not indicated the cause of this increase.
Concern for the disappearing lake has triggered widespread protests in Azerbaijan Province. While many concede that scant precipitation has been a major cause of receding water levels, others have cited the over-building of dams and unreasonable public policy as contributing factors.
