
A boat carrying Iranian, Afghan and Sri Lankan refugees to Australia has capsized in the Indian Ocean.
According to Australian authorities, one infant died and eight people are currently missing.
The report indicates that 97 passengers were onboard the vessel when it capsized on July 13 near Christmas Island.
This is a common destination for refugee boats being smuggled into Australia from Indonesia.
An Australian naval vessel reported picked up 88 survivors from Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.
Reports indicate that since 2007, more than 45,000 Middle Eastern asylum seekers have tried to enter Australia using this route, and more than 1,000 have lost their lives during the passage.
