Website officials released from jail

Foad Sadeghi and Ali Ghazali, the director and editor of the Baztab-e Emrooz website, were released from jail in Tehran on Tuesday June 18, Kaleme reports.

Ali Ghazali was arrested in May when Baztab-e Emrooz became inaccessible. Sadeghi was arrested in the weeks leading up to the presidential election.

Sadeghi was reportedly involved in the efforts to get moderate cleric Hashemi Rafsanjani to run in the election. Hashemi Rafsanjani was later disqualified by the Guardian Council, but reformist candidate Hassan Rohani, endorsed by Hashemi Rafsanjani and former reformist president Mohammad Khatami, went on to win the election with more than 18 million votes.

Many activists are now hoping the new president will bring about a more open political atmosphere with the release of political prisoners and jailed journalists.

Hassan Rohani has urged the public to show patience since such policies require the collaboration of all government branches and are not solely up to the president.
