The daughters of MirHosein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard have issued a message congratulating Hassan Rohani, the new president-elect.
The message indicates that Rohani’s victory is “a welcome result for the people who are now reaping the fruit of resistance, incarcerations and arrests.”
Their parents, Mousavi and Rahnavard, have been under house arrest since February of 2011. Mousavi challenged the victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the last elections with allegations of vote fraud.
Kaleme reports that the children of the opposition leaders write that they have every hope that “under the shelter of wisdom and the law, the people’s lack of trust will transform into confidence, bringing stability and peace.”
The message goes on to add that they hope the new president succeeds on the “critical path” of realizing his campaign promises.
Rohani won the elections with over 51 percent of the vote, running against five other candidates. Many eyes are on him to find a way to release the opposition leaders and other political prisoners.
