One hundred Iranian MPs have written to the Guardian Council to call for the disqualification of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani and Esfandiar Rahim Mashai from the presidential race.
The Fars news agency says the MPs have described the two presidential candidates as being in opposition to the Supreme Leader’s principles.
Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani entered the presidential race representing the reformists, and since the 2009 elections protests the reformists have been heavily sidelined and even referred to as seditious.
Esfandiar Rahim Mashai is the preferred candidate of the current president, Mohammad Ahmadinejad, who has fallen out of favour with the conservative establishment.
The registration of the candidates ended last Saturday May 11, and the Guardian Council is now charged with determining the eligibility of the potential candidates.
