The Iranian government has not responded to an application to hold a May Day demonstration on the upcoming International Workers Day.
ILNA reports that the head of the Tehran House of Workers, Esmail Haghparasti, said: “While Thursday is the first day of our Week of Workers, unfortunately there has been no official response to the workers’ request to stage demonstrations.”
He added that the request has already been submitted to the Ministry of the Interior.
Haghparasti said the labour community is calling for better protection for contract workers and wage increases in line with the real rate of inflation.
Haghparasti expressed disappointment that despite the legitimacy of these worker demands, the government has failed to address them in any meaningful way.
