The head of Iranian Security Forces has announced his opposition to the proposed gathering of government supporters in Azadi Stadium.
Iranian media have been announcing details of “the convention for one hundred thousand supporters of the government” in Azadi Stadium as a ceremony to laud organizers of Norooz travels; however, opponents of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have referred to it as an election meeting.
Esmail Ahmadi Moghaddam, the head of Iranian Security Forces, said: “This could damage public confidence in the election and lead to widespread political problems in the conduct of the election.”
He added that creating such exorbitant costs for the government was not in line with the Supreme Leader’s message of economic and political restraint in the coming year.
Ahmadi Moghaddam maintained, however, that the police are charged with providing security for such events, and should the plan go forward, they will carry out their duty.
