The head of the Anti-Drug Police Force in Tehran has announced the arrest of 500 addicts as part of new efforts by its task force.
Saeed Liravi told the Central News Unit that the detainees will be sent to government rehabilitation centres for treatment.
He said: “The plan was implemented starting today after widespread requests and complaints about addicts in various neighbourhoods.”
He added that his forces have also arrested 700 drug traffickers in the past 10 days and confiscated about 500 kilograms of drugs.
Drug offences are very serious crimes in Iran and drug trafficking could carry the death penalty.
