Parliamentary speaker attacked by president’s supporters
Ali Larijani

Supporters of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attacked Ali Larijani, the speaker of Parliament, during a speech at the Shrine of Fatemeh in Qom.

ILNA reports that Ali Larijani, the head of Parliament and a Qom representative, was in his riding today, Sunday February 10, to mark the 34th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution. The report adds that 100 Ahmadinejad supporters attacked Larijani, chanting slogans against him.

The report indicates that Larijani was pelted with rocks and shoes and was forced to leave his speech unfinished.

The incident appears to follow continued disputes between Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Ali Larijani, which reached an apex last week when the president showed a video recording in Parliament that seemed to accuse the Larijani family of corruption and abuse of power.

The Larijanis head two branches of government, the legislative branch and the judiciary, and they have been in a continuing dispute with the Ahmadinejad administration in recent years.
