New date set for nuclear talks with Iran

Nuclear talks between Iran and the world powers will take place on February 25 in Kazakhstan.

ISNA reports that European officials met with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on February 2 in Munich, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, to set the time and place of their next meeting.

ISNA has not confirmed that Iranian officials have accepted the date and venue.

The world powers have called on Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment activities. Iran insists, however, that the enrichment is only aimed at making fuel for its Tehran research reactor for the production of medical nuclear isotopes.

Iran insists that it will not stop uranium enrichment and, as its nuclear facilities are consistently being inspected by the IAEA inspectors, it also insists that as an NPT signatory in compliance with all the requirements of the treaty, it has a right to do so.

Iran has been subjected to severe sanctions by the U.S. and the EU, which have put a big strain on the possibility of reaching an agreement in the nuclear negotiations. Iran has consistently demanded that the sanctions be eased as a sign of good faith.
