Iranian athlete Sareh Javanmardi won a bronze medal in the women’s 10 metre air-pistol event at the London Paralympic Games while Jalil Bagheri attained gold in the Men’s Shot put.
IRNA reports that Javanmardi won the first medal for Iran in the 14th Paralympic Games on Friday. Aliyeh Mahmoudi, the other Iranian shooter, ranked sixth in the competition.
Javanmardi told reporters following her victory: “Aliyeh Mahmoudi and I went beyond the general expectation of us. We had only come to go beyond our record and did not aim at reaching the finals. I am very glad that we left good records and also reached the finals. I hope getting a medal in shooting, which was wholly unexpected, will result in greater attention by the officials to women’s sports.”
On Saturday, Jalil Bagheri also won Iran’s first gold medal in the Paralmpic games in Men’s shot put.
The Iranian volleyball team, who are five-time Paralympic champions, defeated the Rwandan team and will meet China today, Saturday.
The Iranian Paralympic caravan is comprised of 79 athletes vying in 13 disciplines at the Paralympic Games in London, which are being held from August 29 to September 9.
