On the third day of the London Olympic Games, Iran’s Solmaz Abbasi and Mohsen Shadi managed to get to the rowing semi-finals, while Noshad Alamiyan advanced in table tennis after a dramatic victory over Hong Kong’s Tang Peng.
Iranian media report that Alamiyan, a first-time Olympian, defeated his Hong Kong opponent 4 to 3.
Alamiyan had defeated his Australian rival on Saturday night, which represented Iran’s first-ever victory in Olympic table tennis. He will face a German opponent on Monday.
Iranian rowers Solmaz Abbasi and Mohsen Shadi, who both came sixth in the preliminary matches, managed to gain sufficient points to move on to the next level of competition on Tuesday.
Mohsen Shadi took second place in his group with 7 minutes and 11 seconds. Solmaz Abbasi also gained second position with 8 minutes and 5 seconds, beating her own preliminary record by 12 seconds.
Meanwhile, Mojtaba Abedini, Iran’s only fencing competitor, was defeated by Romania’s Florin Zalomir 15 to 7.
On Saturday, Iran’s Elaheh Ahmadi achieved sixth position in the 10m air rifle shooting competition.
