Blocking of waterway depends on Iranian leader
General Firouzabadi

Head of Iranian Armed Forces says they have a plan for the closure of the Strait of Hormuz; however, the final decision for implementation of such a plan can only be approved by the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

“We are not going to block the Strait of Hormuz, but we do have an intelligent and reasonable plan for it,” General Hasan Firouzabadi said.

He added that the armed forces are prepared with plans for every eventuality; however, the decision to block the Strait of Hormuz rests wholly with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

According to the Islamic Republic constitution, the supreme leader is also the commander in chief of the armed forces.

A number of Iranian MPs have said in the past that Iran may consider blocking the Strait of Hormuz if its interests are threatened.

Recent sanctions on Iranian oil exports have triggered predictions that Iran may block the Strait of Hormuz, and the US has reacted saying its navy will not allow any disturbance in the traffic of the strategic waterway.
