Iranian blogger released after repeated hunger strikes
Hossein Ronaghi Maleki

Jailed Iranian blogger Hossein Ronaghi Maleki has finally been given furlough on bail of one billion toumans after 32 months in jail and several hunger strikes.

The Kaleme website reported today that Ronaghi Maleki, who was arrested in the crackdown on protesters after the controversial 2009 presidential elections, was released today, Monday July 2.

During his time in jail, Ronaghi Maleki suffered from kidney problems and underwent several surgeries, but the judiciary refused to allow him leave to continue his treatment outside the prison.

His latest surgery was carried out two weeks ago and, despite the sensitive nature of the surgery, the jailed blogger was once again transferred back to Evin Prison, despite warnings from physicians that he is in need of special medical care.

In May, Ronaghi Maleki began a hunger strike to protest the judiciary’s refusal to allow him to get treatment outside of prison, and on June 4 he was transferred to hospital in critical condition.

Ronaghi Maleki ran a popular blog under the pseudonym Babak Khorramdin. He was arrested in December of 2009 and held in the solitary for close to 300 days, according to his family.
