Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the head of Iran’s Expediency Council, says Iran has never had any interest in building nuclear weapons.
ILNA reports that Hashemi Rafsanjani met with Pedro Antonio Villena Perez, the new Spanish Ambassador, on Monday in Tehran.
Hashemi told Villena Perez that Iran is a peace-loving nation, adding that “Nuclear weapons are no longer a deterrent force, and their use would only bring about severe and irreparable damage for nations and the future generations.”
A week before EU sanctions on Iranian oil aimed at stopping Iran’s nuclear activities take effect, the chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council told the Spanish ambassador: “European countries are making a great mistake by increasing suspicion against the Islamic Republic on the international stage, and we hope that you, as a member of the European Union, will take effective steps to clear up these mistakes and do away with these suspicions.”
The Spanish ambassador stressed that Spain’s foreign policy has always been to clear up differences through diplomatic means, adding that despite all the problems between Iran and the EU, mutual relations between Iran and Spain have expanded, especially in the areas of commercial and cultural exchange.
