Germany’s Foreign Minister said the international community will not tolerate any attempts by Iran to obtain nuclear weapons, emphasizing Germany’s support for Israel.
AFP reports that Guido Westerwelle told a Jewish advocacy event in Washington: “The current Iranian nuclear program represents an enormous danger not only to Israel but to the region as a whole.”
Despite Israeli concern that Iran is stalling for time, Westerwelle called for further negotiations, maintaining that that “our unity and our resolve is showing results.”
The U.S. and the European Union have imposed widespread sanctions on Iran’s financial institutions and oil exports.
Nuclear negotiations between Iran and the G5+1 resumed on April 14 in Istanbul and both sides have expressed high hopes for the next round of talks in Baghdad on May 23.
