Ahmadinejad threatened with dismissal
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Iranian MP Mostafa Kavakebian says Mahmoud Ahmadinejad must change his ways or Parliament will have to make a motion to question his continued competence as president.

The Mehr News Agency reports that Kavakebian said such a motion will be put into effect, if the Supreme Leader agrees to it, should Ahmadinejad refuse to “retreat” and “adhere to the legislation.”

A motion to question the president’s competence needs the signature of one third of MPs. But a decision to terminate the president can only be carried out if with the Supreme Leader’s approval.

Questioned on whether a third of Parliament would be willing to sign such a motion, Kavakebian said: “I believe the signatures would amount to much more than that… because all the MPs believe that Mr. Ahmadinejad’s answers were aimed at weakening the position of Parliament.”

Ahmadinejad appeared in Parliament on March 14 to answer a series of questions regarding irregularities committed by him and his administration.

Ahmadinejad generally responded with jest, and many MPs have criticized him for “degrading” Parliament with his mockery.

Kavakebian said he hoped Ahmadinejad would use the occasion of Norooz and the Iranian New Year to apologize for his “insults” so that there would be no need to proceed with a motion to question his competence.
