Detained Iranian actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been released after three and half months in custody.
The Shargh newspaper reported her release. Vafamehr was arrested for her role in “My Tehran for Sale” and has received a preliminary sentence of one year in prison and 90 lashes for acting in the film.
Vafamehr, who is also the wife of prominent Iranian filmmaker Nasser Taghvai, has reportedly been released without bail.
“My Tehran for Sale” received a production permit from the Ministry of Guidance three years ago as a planned 40-minute film but it was later produced as a feature length film and distributed across Tehran.
The film, directed by Geranaz Mousavi, an Australia-based Iranian filmmaker, depicts the social problems faced by the protagonist, a female artist living independently in Tehran. The Iranian film community has been very vocal in condemning the sentence against Vafamehr.
