The head of Iran’s Supreme Court has announced that confirmed execution sentences issued by the penal court will now be processed by the Supreme Court in less than 10 days.
“According to an order issued by the head of the judiciary, the Supreme Court is obligated to expedite the files of evil individuals and criminals that have disrupted the security and peace of the people,” Ayatollah Ahmad Mohseni Gorkani said.
He added: “Processing these files after a few months, does not produce any effect in society, and the sentence can only be effective when it is processed with speed.”
He claimed the process can easily be expedited and “only one or a few hours will be given for the defence of these criminals because the crimes of dangerous offenders are very clear.”
Earlier, the head of the Iranian judiciary, Ayatollah Amoli Larijani, had said that the judiciary will expedite the files of “dangerous offenders.”
There has been a surge in the number of execution sentences issued in Iran over the past year. Yesterday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed grave concern over the increase.
