The United Nation’s World Water Development Report 2023 states that 2.3 billion people of the world’s population, or one in four people, live in countries that suffer from water stress. The report states that seven out of 10 countries in the Middle East and North Africa have the highest water stress. In these countries, the average water stress is 820%, meaning annual water withdrawals are eight times higher than the water supply from renewable sources.
Lake Urmia is one of the dry symbols of lakes in the Middle East. According to the report, this problem will spread to areas with abundant water.
In one of the latest comments on the water situation in Iran, Dariush Mokhtari, one of the water experts, told state’s owned ILNA news agency that the country has entered a long-term water shortage.
