The head of the Iranian Parliament, Ali Larijani, has travelled to Russia to attend the 12th annual discussion of international affairs in Sochi, this year’s topic being: “Societies Between War and Peace: Overcoming the Logic of Conflict in Tomorrow’s World”.
Deputy Foreign Minister for Consular and Parliamentary Affairs Hassan Qashqavi is accompanying Larijani on the one-day trip. Larijani is also set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on this trip.
Larijani has been quoted as saying that Iran supports Russia’s role in Syria “because it is being carried out under the legitimate request of the Government of Syria.”
Larijani added that the anti-ISIS coalition led by the United States in the region has been completely ineffective and perhaps even “counterproductive”.
Both Russia and Iran have supported the Beshar Assad regime since the beginning of the Syrian conflict.
