MP seeks solutions to house arrests, media ban

Iranian MP Ali Motahari has written a letter to the chairman of the Assembly of Experts, urging him to review the matter of the house arrest of MirHosein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karroubi and also the media ban on former president Mohammad Khatami.

In his letter to the Assembly of Experts, which is responsible for overseeing the actions of the Supreme Leader, Motahari expresses hope that Ayatollah Khamenei will intervene in the matter.

Motahari implies that top Islamic Republic figures have stated that only Ayatollah Khamenei can effect a change in the matter of the house arrests.

In his letter, which is published on his website, Motahari addresses Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, saying: “Since the the media ban on the former president and the house arrest of the wartime prime minister (MirHosein Mousavi) and his wife (Zahra Rahnavard) and the former speaker of Parliament (Mehdi Karroubi) are not supported by any legal documents or accountability by the usual authorities, I urge you to put these two issues on your agenda in the next session of the Assembly of Experts so that under the wisdom and guidance of the great leader of the Islamic Revolution, these two problems can be resolved.”

He stresses that there is a widespread expectation across Iranian society that these issues should be resolved.

MirHosein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi and Zahra Rahnavard have been under house arrest since February of 2011 for challenging the 2009 presidential elections that triggered widespread mass protests.

Recently, the judiciary has also indicated that there is a media ban on Mohammad Khatami, the former president who supported Mousavi and Karroubi in the 2009 elections.

Motahari has repeatedly questioned the treatment of Mousavi, Rahnavard and Karroubi, saying the regime needs to hold transparent legal proceedings against them if they have truly broken the law rather than punish them without any trial.
