Reactors for Iran said to be part of draft nuclear deal

Twenty-nine leading American scientists, including Nobel Prize winners and nuclear experts, have written a letter to express their support for the nuclear agreement forged between Iran and the 5+1 last month.

The signatories of the letter issued on Saturday August 9 say: “We consider that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) the United States and its partners negotiated with Iran will advance the cause of peace and security in the Middle East and can serve as a guidepost for future non-proliferation agreements.”

They go on to add: “This is an innovative agreement, with much more stringent constraints than any [previously negotiated non-proliferation framework.”

The letter comes as the US president faces tense resistance from Republicans in the Congress and recently also from Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer.

The scientists say: “Concerns about clandestine activities in Iran are greatly mitigated by the dispute resolution mechanism built into the agreement. The 24-day cap on any delay to access is unprecedented, and it will allow effective challenge inspection for the suspected activities of greatest concern.”

Congress is set to vote on the deal in September but Obama has said that he will veto an opposing vote.
